Legends of the Plains

This week in Plains Folk for North Dakota release I'm beginning a series of three columns devoted to legends of the plains. These all come from my students at NDSU. For more student legends, go to my NDSU home page and follow the link for "Legends of NDSU."

Thanks to Mayville

Many thanks to Dalton McMahon for his hospitality Monday night. Following a good meal at Paula's (I didn't know there was that cozy lounge in the back), it was good to see Paul Batesel and other friends from the Mayville State faculty, along with citizens from the area, including Elroy Lindaas, our singing senator. And Elmer of the Butterfly--you know who you are. A cordial group--as to be expected in Mayville.

Regions of Mind

Now comes a message from Geitner Simmons, an editorial writer for the Omaha World-Herald. We met and chatted at a recent conference on regions in America hosted by the Great Plains Humanities Center, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Geitner writes of the state of the plains, incorporating remarks from me and other presenters at Lincoln, in his blog, Regions of Mind. A serious thinker and elegant writer about life on the plains.

Lecture in Mayville

Monday evening 8 December I'll be presenting a public lecture in Mayville ND, hosted by Dalton McMahon at Mayville State University. Thanks for the invitation, Dalton. It's at 7:00, on campus, in the Old Main theatre, I think (local media should say for sure, or ask Dalton at dalton_mcmahon@mail.masu.nodak.edu). The lecture is a work-in-progress under the title, "My So-Called Life on the Plains: Confessions of the Last Picture Show Generation."

Beginning the Blog

This is a weblog, or "blog," as people like to call such things, devoted to work, journeys, and points of interest on the Great Plains of North America. Here I will post information about upcoming concerts and lectures, photos of things that I write about in the column, and I'm not sure what else. I'll try not to be self-indulgent.
