Nick's Hamburger Shop Brookings, South Dakota

Because I don't put negative comments in this register (if a place is bad, I just don't review it), I'm going to refrain from comment about Duane's demeanor or general customer relations at Nick's. You want to check this place out, though, because it's a hamburger joint of the old school--hand-formed burgers smashed out en masse on a grease-bubbly griddle, onions piled over all. The only places like this I know of on the plains are Nick's of Brookings and the Cozy Inn of Salina, Kansas. Stop by, see (and smell) the operation, buy a bag of burgers to go, and maybe tell Duane a joke.--TI 1/4/01
