The initial attraction here is the wonderfully retro design. I mean, that sputnik-era sign out front has you ready to go in and watch cartoons with Captain 11. The burgers are old-fashioned ones on mushy buns. Breakfast is a particularly good buy. The proprietor is Mike Snover, who bought the place in 1991. He says there never was a Scotty, it's just a name. Scotty's once was a regional chain (with restaurants in Mitchell, Bismarck, Glendive, Scott's Bluff, and other towns), but no longer; remaining Scotty's drive-ins are independent of one another. As for the Aberdeen Scotty's, in business since 1962, Mike says, "I grew up on this side of town; we ate here all the time."--TI 6/18/00
