Rick and Barb Newman have run the Zesto of Pierre for twelve years. Back in the 1950s Zesto was a regional chain. There still are Zestos in six South Dakota towns, but they are not connected; all are independently owned and operated. The Zesto (open 1 March through 1 October) is the nexus of the summer evening experience in Pierre. It's particularly notable for its original soft-serve creations--ice cream, fourteen kinds of sherbert ("our calling card," Rick says), and weird sundaes. I tried the Peach Cobbler (not cobbler at all, but a concoction of ice cream, caramel syrup, nuts, and fresh peaches) and the Armadillo (a sundae with a hard shell of butterscotch). A great place to chill.--TI 6/18/00
