Richard McConnell's Memory Map

Richard McConnell's Memory Map

A number of people were helpful and hospitable to us as we looked into the history of Bowesmont, and one of the most so was Richard McConnell, a Bowesmont expatriate now living in Drayton. Julie interviewed him there on 29 Janaury 1998. One of the interesting outcomes of that interview was a memory map--a sketch of Bowesmont as McConnell remembered it from the time he was growing up. So the time depicted was mainly the 1940s-50s, but notations on the map reach before and after that. Julie made this sketch from the recollections of McConnell as he spoke and directed.

This is a wonderful little research document--the image captures that as-told-to feeling of field work. More than that, though, it is evidence of the powerful impression that Bowesmont made on a person growing up in the community, an impression still fixed in memory a half-century later. For those reasons, we here present Jim McConnell's Memory Map of Bowesmont.
